Harlem’s biggest Black-culture weekend is about to carry one of its most recognizable institutions back onto Adam Clayton Powell Jr. Boulevard.
The Apollo is returning to the African American Day Parade after nearly two decades away, and the homecoming comes with a distinction: the theater will receive the parade’s inaugural Community Institution Award. The 57th annual parade is set for Sunday, September 20, with a full community program beginning a day earlier on Saturday, September 19.
A Harlem institution returns to the street
This year’s theme, “Good Businesses Sustain Our Future,” makes The Apollo’s return especially resonant. The theater is not only a stage with a global cultural legacy. It is a Harlem institution whose programming, employment, audiences and neighborhood presence have helped turn Black creativity into an economic engine.
Saturday’s Community Literacy, Health & Culture Festival begins at noon at the Adam Clayton Powell Jr. State Office Building Plaza. The Apollo says teaching artist Charlene “Chi Chi” Smith will bring dance programming to the plaza as part of the weekend.
On Sunday, the pre-parade show begins at 11 a.m. at the plaza. Apollo Amateur Night 2024 grand-prize winner Cruz Angel is scheduled to perform before the parade steps off at 12:30 p.m.
More than a parade route
The parade runs along Adam Clayton Powell Jr. Boulevard through Harlem, with The Apollo describing its participation as part of a field of more than 300 performances and 37 floats. DJ SLID3 is slated to soundtrack The Apollo’s float.
The scale matters, but so does the history. African American Day Parade, Inc. traces the event to 1969, when organizers created a platform for Black representation, heritage, accomplishment and community pride. More than half a century later, the weekend still places business, education, health, arts and culture in the same public space.
