7NEWS Australia on the announcement of the first NFL regular-season game in Melbourne. Pre-event coverage from March 2026.
MELBOURNE — The NFL’s first regular-season game in Australia is being packaged as much more than football. The 49ers and Rams will meet at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, but the league has surrounded the matchup with concerts, fan activations, flag football, official watch parties, retail and hospitality.
The NFL Kickoff Festival presented by American Express runs September 10 through 12 at Melbourne Park. The league’s programming includes live music, NFL legends, interactive fan experiences, food, merchandise and dedicated family programming.

The game is becoming the anchor, not the entire product
For global expansion, that matters. A single game gives local fans a few hours of access. A festival gives the league multiple days to teach the culture of the sport, create sponsor touchpoints and build habits around fandom.
The festival also creates opportunities for fans who do not hold a game ticket. That widens the audience and gives the NFL a public-facing footprint in the city before and after kickoff.
Music is part of the international strategy
The Jonas Brothers will headline halftime during the Melbourne game. The NFL says the performance is the first of seven American Express-presented halftime shows across seven countries and four continents during the 2026 international schedule.
That is significant because halftime is no longer being treated as filler. It is becoming a global entertainment asset with its own audience, sponsor value and social reach.
What sponsors gain
American Express is attached not only to the game-week festival but also to the international halftime platform. That creates repeated association with access, entertainment and premium experiences instead of one-off signage.
For brands, the value is in the number of ways fans can interact: buying a ticket, attending a concert, joining a flag clinic, shopping merchandise, watching on a giant screen or sharing a halftime moment online.
What Melbourne can teach the league
The NFL is not simply exporting American football. It is exporting an entertainment ecosystem around football.
That model is likely to become increasingly important as leagues chase international growth. The game creates credibility. Music, culture, hospitality and experiential programming make the event accessible to people who may not yet know the difference between third-and-two and a two-minute drill.
