NEW YORK. Sunday gives the city two very different ways to begin an NFL season.
At 1 p.m., the Jets open on the road against the Tennessee Titans at Nissan Stadium. At 8:20 p.m., the Giants host the Dallas Cowboys at MetLife Stadium on Sunday Night Football.
Same market. Same opening Sunday. Completely different pressure.
The Jets start away from the noise
The Jets begin the 2026 regular season in Nashville before returning to MetLife in Week 2. An afternoon road opener can be useful because the football has to lead the conversation. There is no home-opening spectacle to hide behind, only the first real look at what carried over from camp and preseason.
For New York fans, it also creates the first half of a full football day. The Jets should be finished before the Giants take the national stage.
The Giants get the spotlight immediately
The Giants do not get a quiet entrance. John Harbaugh’s first regular-season game as Giants head coach is at home, in primetime, against Dallas.
The rivalry has history, television weight and plenty of current storylines. The Giants beat Dallas 34-17 in the final week of the 2025 season, but Week 1 starts the accounting over again. Sunday is the first real test of the offseason changes and of a roster that now includes a familiar No. 13.
Odell is not just a nostalgia story anymore
Odell Beckham Jr. officially returned to the Giants in June and made the initial 53-man roster. He will again wear No. 13, the number attached to the first chapter of his New York career.
That makes Cowboys week an unusually fitting return to regular-season football. Beckham’s one-handed catch against Dallas in 2014 remains one of the defining images of his first Giants run. More than a decade later, the question is not whether the old highlight still matters. It is what role he can create now.
