New York’s lunch break gets a three-hour upgrade today. CookUnity is taking over five Manhattan bodegas and corner stores from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. on Thursday, September 17, putting eight chefs behind the counter for a free-meal pop-up built around the neighborhood bodega.

Called The Most Legendary Lunch Break, the activation brings Rocco DiSpirito, Vikas Khanna, José Garces, Andrew Rea of Babish, Einat Admony, John DeLucie, Miriam Milord and Antony Nassif to shops across Midtown, Chelsea, Flatiron, Murray Hill and the West Village. Meals are free while supplies last.

The five stops

New York Pizza and Cafe, 369 Madison Avenue
Slice N’ Spice Deli & Grill, 451 Third Avenue
Madison Square Deli & Convenience, 266 West 23rd Street
Bari Bodega, 873 Broadway
Sam’s Deli, 275 West Fourth Street

What’s on the menu

The dishes are built for a fast lunch run: DiSpirito’s Bronx Bomb Burrito, Khanna’s paneer makhani, Garces’ mission-style burrito, Babish’s spicy chili-garlic noodles, Admony’s chicken shawarma and Milord’s Ghanaian chicken peanut stew. Grab a packaged meal to go, sample hot food on-site or use the self-service microwaves.

Why the bodega

CookUnity could have staged this in a hotel tasting room. Instead it chose the most familiar counter in the city. The bodega already stands for speed, neighborhood trust and a quick bite between meetings, so putting name chefs behind that counter tells the brand’s story without a single ad: restaurant cooking, delivered to an ordinary workday.

It also fits the company. CookUnity was founded in New York and is headquartered in Brooklyn. Today it is using the city as its set.

Before you go

The pop-up ends at 2:30 p.m. and food runs while supplies last, so earlier is better.
